Tropical Storm Nicholas Update
September 14, 2021 @ 10AM

According to the National Weather Service Lake Charles, Tropical Storm Nicholas will continue to weaken as it slowly moves through the Houston, Texas area today.  Tonight it will slowly turn east and head towards the Beaumont region possibly as a tropical depression before slowing down or even stalling in southwest or south central Louisiana Wednesday into Thursday.

Wind gusts today will be in the 25 to 45 mph range for southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. 

Rain totals are expected to reach 4 to 10 inches in our region with locally higher amounts possible.  Traveling is not recommended during flash flood warnings and citizens are encouraged to NOT drive through high waters.

The City of Orange Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Nicholas and will post updates as they come available.  If travel is necessary, please check drivetexas.org to check for road closures.

Citizens are encouraged to continue monitoring local news stations and official social media sites for up to date information.

Hurricane Nicholas Update
September 13, 2021 @ 10PM

According to the National Weather Service - Lake Charles, Hurricane Nicholas is forecast to make landfall on the middle Texas coast soon.  The forecast track does not go up very far inland and moves along the I-10 corridor from Beaumont to Lafayette Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Our region is expected to see 5 to 10 inches of rain with locally higher amounts of 15 to 20 inches possible along and to the right of the path of Nicholas.  Our region should expect to see street flooding during periods of heavy rain.  The highest risk area is going to be along the I-10 corridor from Beaumont to Lafayette, extending to the coast.

Tides are expected to run 1 to 4 feet above normal in our region, with the higher values in southeast Texas.  During high tides, minor coastal flooding is expected. 

There is high confidence this system will cause flooding across our region.

The City of Orange Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor Hurricane Nicholas and will post updates as they become available.

Citizens are encouraged to avoid driving through high water and should stay off the roads if at all possible. Please continue monitoring local news stations and official social media sites for up-to-date information.

According to the National Weather Service Lake Charles, Tropical Storm Nicholas is forecast to make landfall on the middle Texas coast tonight. There is a chance it could become a category one hurricane before landfall.

Regardless of development, our region is expecting to see 5 to 10 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts of 15 to 20 inches possible.  Street flooding during periods of heavy rain should be expected.  Citizens are encouraged to NOT drive through high water. Heavy rain and flash flood threat will start this evening in southeast Texas and will extend through Tuesday evening.

Tides will run 1 to 4 feet above normal in our region, with higher values in southeast Texas.  During high tides, minor coastal flooding is expected.

According to the US National Weather Service Lake Charles Louisiana, Tropical Storm Nicholas is forecast to make landfall on the middle Texas coast later today or tonight. There is a chance it could become a category one hurricane before landfall. Regardless of development, our region is expected to receive 5 to 10 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible. Citizens should expect to see street flooding during heavy periods of rain. Our region can expect to see flood conditions through Wednesday. Tides are expected to run 1 to 4 feet above normal in our region, with the higher values in southeast Texas. During high tides, minor coastal flooding is expected.

The City of Orange Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Nicholas and will post updates when available.
